Plagiarism

Wikepedia.org defines 'plagiarism' as follows:

Plagiarism (from the Latin plagiare, "to kidnap") is the practice of claiming, or implying, original authorship of (or incorporating material from) someone else's written or creative work, in whole or in part, into one's own without adequate acknowledgement.

On their website, Indiana University succinctly summarised the key ways to avoid plagiarism by suggesting to their students that you should give credit whenever you use another person's idea, opinion, or theory;

  • any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings--any pieces of information--that are not common knowledge
  • quotations of another person's actual spoken or written words
  • paraphrase of another person's spoken or written words
